Updated: Forrest Fenn’s Personal Collection of Topo Maps Sells for $3,550.00 on eBay

Note: This is a rapidly changing story. We will update it as new information becomes available.

In an eBay auction that concluded just a few minutes before this writing, “Forrest Fenn’s Personal Topo Map Collection with 2 wooden map cases. CO, NM, UT” closed with a winning bid of $3,550.00. Bidding quickly rose from around $900 to the final bid in the last 30 minutes of the auction. Shipping was not included as the buyer was expected to pick the maps up from Fenn’s storage location.

The official USGS maps were dated around 1954 an included the complete sets for Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. Colorado and New Mexico are two of the four “search” states in which Fenn has hinted he had hidden his famous treasure.

A total of 7 bidders (including this writer) cast a total of 52 bids to get to the final price. The winning buyer on eBay (which protects bidders’ identities) was “c***1,” who had only bid on one item prior to this one on eBay.

The auction was posted by seller “nmmountainco505,” whose been an eBay member since February, 2017. This was the member’s first auction. We presume “nmmountainco505” represents a trusted member of Fenn’s family. (Update: We have had confirmation from two sources that Fenn’s grandson, Shiloh Old, is the individual behind “nmmountainco” on eBay.)

(Update 2018 10 13: Kristie of The Hint of Riches Forum and The Raven’s Nest on YouTube has informed us that the winning bidder will be a guest on her YouTube program at 7pm MDT on Monday, October 15, 2018. She also informed us via text message that she (the winning bidder) will “…make a special announcement regarding the maps…” during that program.

(Update 2018 10 13:  An unconfirmed source indicated that “…probably 2 or 3 of the drawers are Colorado maps, one for Utah, and the rest, New Mexico.” There are also indications that there are multiple copies of some of the maps, some with Fenn’s handwritten notes. Fenn’s grandson, Shiloh, also confirmed that Fenn had given the entire lot to him (Shiloh) and that it was his (Shiloh’s) decision to auction them.)

Voicemail Q&A: “Is there going to be a Forrest Fenn treasure TV show?’

The following voicemail regarding a potential “Forrest Fenn TV show” was left by viewer Davio22 on October 11, 2018. You can read our response below the audio track.

Our friend, Davio22, is referring to a story that was documented in an article written by Nellie Andreeva on October 10, 2018 and published online at deadline.com.

In summary, the article indicates that Fox Media’s Entertainment Group has granted a “put pilot” commitment to a collaborative group consisting of a number of entertainment industry notables. A put pilot is a pilot that the network has agreed to air either as a special series or one-time event. If the network does not air the pilot episode, the network will owe substantial monetary penalties to the studio. Generally, this guarantees that the pilot will be picked up by the network.

“Forrest’s Treasure is described as a grounded, family drama with a flair for adventure inspired by David Kushner’s upcoming book on the treasure of Forrest Fenn.  When a family from Chicago moves to a small town in Montana to pick up the pieces of their fractured lives, they find meaning and purpose in the mystery of a hidden treasure.”

Kushner is a freelance writer whose article (A Deadly Hunt for Hidden Treasure Spawns an Online Mystery) on Fenn and the treasure appeared in Wired Online in late July, 2018.

Our opinion: Two things – apparently there is a book in the offing, written by Kushner, on the subject of the Fenn Treasure, and the Andreeva article makes the potential of some Fenn Treasure related programming sound promising. But, our experience is that these projects take a minimum of months to develop, and there are myriad of obstacles that will have to be overcome along the way.

We presume the project would have not progressed to this stage without Fenn’s approval.

AGK’s Lighting Set Up

We’ve had several questions about the lighting set-up in our “command center,” as I like to call my living room. Although there are a pair of table lamps in front of us, our primary light source is a pair of 105 watt compact flourescent light (CFL) bulbs with mean-time-between-failure (MTBF) of 4,000 hours. Amazon sells them, as well as CFLs in various other shapes and sizes. We learned to use this when we were still in the streaming and documentary making business. I bought this pair for about $30.00.

I screw them into a pair of wall sconces that I purchased at Lowes. They cost about $8.00 each.

They provide an even daylight temperature and they run extremely cool.

If you have any questions about them, please comment below. Click on the image to see a larger, higher resolution version.

New Article on Forrest Fenn in Western Art & Architecture Online

“First of all, the chest itself is a treasure, a cast-bronze, Romanesque lockbox, dating to about 1150. Second, it’s filled with items only a lifelong collector, ardent archeologist, and lover of beautiful things with a mischievous gleam in his eye could have thought to amass. Antique jewelry and fetishes, gold coins and heavy gold nuggets, uncut emeralds, rubies, and diamonds all lie jumbled in a glorious heap, as if in a N.C. Wyeth illustration for Treasure Island.”
